1913 Train Wreck

The Chicago, Bluffton and Cincinnati Rail Road existed from 1907-1917 connecting Huntington to Cincinnati. In 1913 a loose locomotive from the roundhouse ran down Front Street Riverside Drive tracks and crashed into the William Mayne grocery store on S. Jefferson Street. Damage was extensive but no one was hurt.

The Canal in Huntington

The first Hoosier lottery was conducted in 1819, with the hope of raising the necessary funds to build a canal around the Falls of Ohio, but the game garnered only $2,536. This was considerably shy of the dollars needed to begin construction. It was the Internal Improvements Act of 1836, which appropriated a time-sensitive 6 million dollars for canal building and other improvements that launched Indiana into the Canal Era. On February 22, 1832, the Wabash & Erie Canal was started in Fort Wayne, IN, on the anniversary of George Washington's birthday. One of the great ironies of history is that the slow-paced mule-driven canal boats transported the rails from foundries for building the railroads, which closed the chapter on the Canal Era by the 1870s. The last canalboat on the Wabash Canal made its last docking in 1874 in Huntington, Indiana,; other sections shut down years earlier. The Huntington Landing started 120 feet west on Washington St. and continued to the lock at Cherry St. The Wabash & Erie Canal was 4 feet deep and 100 feet wide at this point. Other locks were at First St. and Byron St. The Canal was completed from Fort Wayne to Huntington on July 4, 1835, and from Toledo to Evansville, 459 miles, in 1854. The Canal preceded the railroad to Huntington by 20 years, spurring early settlement. The Canal was abandoned in 1873. The 1866 map of downtown Huntington shows where the Wabash and Erie canal crossed Jefferson Street just above Washington Street, about where Nick’s Kitchen is today. As you stand near the marker, make sure to look up and see the dates on tops of the buildings, especially those on the corner of Jefferson and Park, near the Rotary Centennial Park. The town of Roanoke was founded near the Dickey lock, with L.G Jones building first a saw mill and later a flour mill near the lock. The population of the town continue to increase from 1840 to 1849.
